Magnitude 7.7 Kepulauan Mentawai Region, Indonesia

As determined by the USGS, a major earthquake occurred Monday 240 km (150 miles) west of Bengkulu, Sumatra, Indonesia.  This earthquake occurred as a result of thrust faulting on or near the subduction interface plate boundary between the Australia and Sunda plates.  Reports of damage and injuries are steadily climbing.
