| PASSCAL
is one of two major instrumentation programs of IRIS (the other
being the Global Seismic Network or GSN).
PASSCAL operates a pool of over 1000 portable seismic instruments
to record active source reflection data, active source refraction
data or natural source recordings of earthquakes. The instrumentation
is supported by an instrument
center at New Mexico
Tech, Socorro, New Mexico.
PASSCAL Instruments and support are available to the academic research
community according to the rules and policies set by the IRIS
Executive Committee. All data from PASSCAL supported experiments
are made available through the IRIS DMC
in Seattle, Washington.
Over the last several years the PASSCAL program has received significant
support from the Department of Energy. Congress has appropriated
the funds through DOE's
National Nuclear Security Administration Nonproliferation and
Verification research and development account.
This money has allowed for the purchase of a new 25 element telemetered
broadband array and the start of the replacement of the original
PASSCAL dataloggers. During the last few years PASSCAL has significantly
increased the support of DOE
experiments.
