Assessing geologic risk within densely populated regions requires geophysical approaches that can safely and effectively operate in the presence of cultural noise. Identifying and characterizing active geologic processes requires high resolution imaging capabilities in the upper 10’s to 100’s of meters depth. In this webinar, I present active source seismic imaging approaches to characterize soil, fluid and rock properties in the shallow subsurface. I focus on the characterization of active faults beneath urban centers and high permeability flow paths that provide a conduit for upward flow of fluid and gas. I highlight the use of seismic land streamers to acquire large data volumes to jointly evaluate p-wave/s-wave tomograms and reflection images. Through the use of contact coupled geophones, semi-autonomous vehicles, and full wavefield imaging approaches, active source seismology can serve a unique niche for assessing Quaternary processes that can directly impact a vulnerable population.
