Description
We will investigate granite weathering processes in the Southern Sierra Nevada batholith, within the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory established by NSF. The critical zone is the uppermost subsurface, where geological, hydrological, biological, and atmospheric processes interact. Weathering of rock to form saprolite and soil is a fundamental process in the critical zone. We will map the depth to the base of the weathering front using near-surface seismic refraction techniques.
