Introduction to Marine Seismic Processing

1h 30min Advanced

This presentation and associated activity introduces students to both the concepts of processing marine seismic data as well a providing an introduction to PROMAX software.

A data set for use with this activity can be downloaded here.

Author: Andy Goodliffe, U. of Alabama (amg "at" ua.edu)

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

  • Describe the hardware used for the acquisition of marine seismic reflection survey
  • Describe the geometry of a marine seismic reflection survey
  • Load data and conduct basic data processing using ProMax (e.g  CMP gather, filtering, stacking, migration)

Related Animations

Man-made sound waves produced by airguns travel through the earth, reflect off different rock layers, then are recorded by geophones being towed behind the boat.
