The following collection of seismograms was scanned at 300 dpi, 8-bit gray scale
by
BMI Imaging Systems, Sunnyvale, CA, USA, in May-June of 2000,
from
"*Seismogramme des nordpazifischen und sunamerikanischen
Erdbebens am 16. August 1906*",
by E. Rudolph and E. Tams, published by the International
Association of Seismology, Strassburg, 1907.
Samples were scanned at 200 dpi and 400 dpi,
8-bit gray scale. Due to cost consideration,
the seismograms were finally scanned at 300 dpi,
8-bit gray scale in actual size. The collection
of seismograms contain 123 individual records
and the scanned image files were "video edited"
by W. H. K. Lee using the PaperPort Deluxe9
software of Scansoft, Inc.
Since many original seismograms are 90 cm long, many records
contain sections of the
original seismogram in order to fit into the published paper size
(about 32 by 45 cm with
margins for annotation). Because some records contain seismograms
from two or more
different stations they were separated into different image files, resulting
in a total of 160 files.
For rapid viewing, the edited image files were saved in this
Website at large "quality" reduction
in PDF format, but the original edited image files are archived at IRIS Data
Center for download
at the scanned 300 dpi resolution.
Seismograms are organized by
station as follows, with brief indication of the instrument and
component. Because the 1906 Aleutian Island (USA) earthquake
(Mw=7.8) occurred about
30 minutes prior to the 1906 Valparaiso (Chile) earthquake (Mw=8.5),
care must be exercised
in using the following seismograms as noted by Omori.
