Oceans and other water bodies cover over 70% of Earth's surface, shrouding critical geologic regimes, natural resource deposits, and ecosystems. Obtaining a deeper understanding of the processes occurring on Earth requires unique strategies and innovative technologies, as well as strong collaborations across the shoreline, between scientific disciplines, and through international and industry partnerships. To address this priority, a two-day, science-focused symposium will be convened uniting the seismological and marine geoscience community.
The Marine Seismology Symposium will enable participants to share exciting new science results, discuss future directions and key scientific questions, promote and empower early career scientists by showcasing their work and providing networking opportunities, and communicate changes to critical marine seismic infrastructure so that research can be successfully planned, funded, and conducted using existing and evolving tools. This symposium is critical for growing and broadening the marine seismic research community and will facilitate progress toward better understanding of frontier science topics such as the processes related to geohazards like megathrust earthquakes, tsunamis, undersea landslides, and volcanic eruptions as well as the processes that control the formation and evolution of ocean basins.

The symposium will be held at the Maritime Conference Center located near BWI airport in Linthicum Heights, Maryland.
Supported participants will stay onsite at the Maritime Conference Center hotel. The hotel offers a free shuttle to BWI airport and the Amtrak/light rail train station as well as free parking. Breakfast and dinner are also included for those staying at the hotel.
Funding for airfare and lodging will be available for some U.S.-based participants. An application for this travel support will be announced at a future date.
The symposium will feature two full days of marine seismology science presentations and discussions on September 29th and 30th, as well as a poster session. A late evening icebreaker will be held on September 28th for students, early careers, and new-to-marine-seismology landlubbers. The agenda will be assembled by the organizing committee and announced here when finalized. Comments and suggestions to organizing committee members (listed on the "Info" tab) are encouraged.
Presentations will be made available to remote participants through a link to slides and the presenter’s audio feed. Presentation materials will also be posted after the symposium with the presenters’ permission.
