A magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred northwest of Lake Titicaca, near the town of Juliaca (population 276,110) that sits in the northern Altiplano, or Andean Plateau. At 3,825 meters (12,549 ft) above sea level, it is the most extensive high plateau on Earth outside Tibet. Due to the 218 km (135 miles) depth of the earthquake there were no reports of damage or injuries.
