Although commonly thought to only occur at tectonic plate boundaries, earthquakes can occur elsewhere. Earthquakes can occur in the middle of a tectonic plate if the plate is rifting (extending), over a hotspot such as at Yellowstone National Park, or rebounding due to loss of large amounts of sediments
