A fault scarp is a break in the ground caused by an earthquake. Earthquakes in the Basin and Range Province tend to pull the ground apart so that one side drops down past the other, sometimes leaving a prominent scarp on the surface. Downward movements due to thousands of earthquakes over hundreds of thousands of years eventually results in basins surrounded by mountain ranges.
