How much does the Basin and Range Province expand each year?

The Basin and Range Province is expanding at an average rate of 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) per year. Over its north-south length of about 1600 kilometers (1000 miles), the Basin and Range Province is gaining an area equal to one football field per year.

If current cities had existed millions of years ago, Reno, Nevada would have been located at half the current distance from Denver, Colorado. It would have been a much shorter drive!
