*POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH SCIENTIST*
The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites
applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in wildfire
modeling. The successful candidate will work with a team led by
Professors Park Williams and Pierre Gentine to develop a new wildfire
model for the western United States using machine learning and dynamic
vegetation modeling. The wildfire model will be used to disentangle the
various drivers of increased western United States wildfire activity in
recent decades, to make near-term forecasts of wildfire likelihood, and
to make longer-term simulations to inform sustainable management and
policy. The position will be located primarily at the Lamont-Doherty
Earth Observatory in Palisades, NY and space will also be available for
work on the nearby main campus of Columbia University in Manhattan.
Candidates must have a PhD in a field related to environmental or
computer science and have a strong background in statistical programming
or data sciences. Demonstrated experience with machine learning,
ecosystem analysis and/or modeling, and analyzing large and disparate
datasets are highly desired. Creative thinking and independence will be

Current funding is in place for 2.5 years.
