Post-doctoral position in computational seismology

Università di Padova

Posted: 11/07/2019

Open Until: 04/01/2020

Dear colleagues,
The Department of Geosciences (University of Padova, Italy) and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV-Bologna, Italy) is opening a post-doctoral fellowships in seismological modelling and computational seismology in the frame of the ERC-StG grant NEWTON (#758199).

Research focuses on coupling seismological and geodynamical modelling of the Earth’s interior in order to better determine the recent mantle dynamics and present-day structure around convergent margins. The research activities rely on seismological inversion and data assimilation techniques. A primary goal of the project is to develop full-waveform imaging strategies for constraining mantle anisotropic elastic properties in subduction zone settings. Geodynamic simulations will provide synthetic seismological models for this purpose. Imaging techniques will then be applied to real seismic datasets collected at two focus sites - the Cascadia Subduction Zone and the Mediterranean. The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with a geodynamic group based at University of Padova, seismologists at INGV-Bologna, as well as with a network of scientists that will actively collaborate on the project.

The candidates should hold a PhD in Geophysics-Seismology and should have experience in seismic data processing and inversion of single/multiple seismic phases (body and surface waves) with full-waveform methods. Skills in computational seismology and experience with software simulating the propagation of the seismic wave field (e.g., SPECFEM3D, AxiSEM) are strongly desired.

The successful candidates are expected to work in both independent and collaborative group environments and to be self-motivated to accomplish the research goals. The initial appointment will be for a period of one year and can be extended up to maximum 3 years. The gross salary is 26500-30800 €/year, depending on experience, and will be integrated with health insurance and benefits. Information on the cost of living in Padova can be found here:
