Operational Seismologist

KNMI, the Netherlands

Posted: 06/30/2021

Open Until: 09/05/2021

The R&D Seismology & Acoustics (R&DSA) department operates a network of seismo-acoustical monitoring stations in the Netherlands. Volcano monitoring is done on the BES-islands where additional GNSS measurements are being made. Experimental developments are guided towards low-cost sensors for micro-gravity measurements and multi-sensor platforms.

For the extension of our network, we have a vacancy for an Operational Seismologist. The network consists of (borehole) seismometers and accelerometers to characterize natural and induced earthquakes and to determine their impact. Next to that, infrasound sensors are deployed to distinguish between vibrations in the solid earth and atmosphere. The Operational Seismologist will realize the extension of this network and develop products for end users on the basis of existing and new data.

For this position, experience with the complete seismo-acoustical measurement chain is needed (or to be partly developed), i.e., from hardware to product development in the cloud. The work will be performed in an Agile team, which applies state-of-the-art measurement techniques, data processing software and product development.
