The Alaska Earthquake Center (AEC) is seeking applicants to fill a Field Engineer position. The primary responsibilities of this position are to design, install, and maintain DC power and wireless communication systems to support real-time seismic data acquisition from all parts of the state. This position involves working as part of a small team and requires extensive travel to remote locations and work in adverse weather conditions.
AEC operates a network of sensor stations throughout Alaska to monitor regional seismic activity in real-time. Environmental conditions, power requirements, and data acquisition methods vary widely across the network. While power is converted from domestic or telecom sources where available, a majority of sensor stations are powered by stand-alone solar-charged battery systems. Seismic data is transmitted via UHF radios, cellular modems, satellite terminals, and microwave links, among other methods. The Field Engineer will join a small team of engineers and technicians responsible for the design and maintenance of this network.
Qualified candidates will have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of DC power systems and the ability to troubleshoot these systems independently. The Field Engineer will design, build, evaluate, and install power conversion and distribution circuits and must understand these systems at the component, board, and system levels. Experience with circuit design, simulation, and layout tools is desired.
The Field Engineer will be responsible for installing and operating both wired and wireless digital communications systems used to transmit data between field stations and AEC's lab in Fairbanks. Experience operating digital radios or satellite communications systems is desired, as is familiarity with IP communications protocols.
The Field Engineer will organize and lead other staff in the field and must be highly organized, self-motivated, and responsible. Other desirable traits include expertise in antenna theory, experience designing embedded systems, and knowledge of lithium battery technology.
