This is a managerial position responsible for the operation of the IRIS Data Services (DS) Directorate


  • Provide technical advice and leadership in the development and evolution of the Data Services Directorate
    • Provide support for and received advice from the Data Services Standing Committee that provides oversight of Data Services

    • With the Standing Committee Chairperson, represent Data Services in IRIS Board meetings

    • Participate in the Senior Management Team meetings

  • ​Interact with IRIS President, the Directors of Instrumentation Services and Education and Public Outreach and Program Managers to ensure effective collaboration between IRIS Directorates and Programs

  • Interact with IRIS governance to represent IRIS DS in the discussions.  This includes IRIS BoD, IRIS CoComm and DSSC

  • Working with the DCCS, develop policies to ensure DS can meet the needs of the IRIS community within available funding.

  • Develop and implement the DS strategic plan, strategic action plans and ensure the strategic directives are accomplished.

  • Manage the Data Services Directorate including:

    • Preparation of annual and multi-year program plans and task-based, time-phased budgets

    • Track spending on DS activities using monthly or as needed reports from Financial Services

    • Develop plans for the use of yearly carryover funds for DS projects

    • Approve IRIS DS Acquisitions and invoice approvals

    • Serve as or delegate the role of custodian of DS acquired property and equipment

    • Serve as IRIS technical representative for contracts and subawards implementing DS activities including but not limited to subawards to the University of Washington and UCSD

    • Prepare periodic status reports

    • Manage and approve travel by DMC staff

    • Manage the lease for the Data Management Center

    • Acquire equipment, materials and supplies needed to support Data Services

    • Approve invoices for payment

    • Approve all purchase acquisitions for DS following IRIS policies

  • Serve as primary interface between Data Services and the user community

    • Prepare and obtain approval for IRIS policies, procedures, instruction manuals and training materials

    • Organize community training courses normally in conjunction with other meetings such as AGU and IRIS Workshops

    • Represent DS with other domestic organizations including NSF, USGS, other federal and state agencies

    • Coordinate IRIS DS with other domestic data-related organizations such as UNAVCO, EarthCube, Council of Data Facilities (CDF) and Cyberinfrastructure for Geodynamics (CIG)

    • Represent IRIS and IRIS DS in relevant international communities including FDSN and FDSN Working Groups, World Data System, International Seismological Commission (ISC), Core Trust Seal and other international coordinating organizations as needed

    • Determine DS representation at national and international meetings

    • Work with members of the IRIS community to ensure that they have available the quantity and quality of data needed for their research

    • Propose and develop new initiatives to meet the community’s needs

  • Serve as a member or IRIS representative on other committees as designated by IRIS President

  • Respond to potential funding opportunities from NSF and other funding organizations



  • Oversee the operation of the IRIS DMC
  • Supervise al IRIS DMC staff



  • Advanced degree in engineering or science or equivalent professional experience
  • 10+ years professional experience in managerial and technical operations
  • Geophysical field experience


JOB SPECIFICATIONS: (Knowledge, Skill and Ability Requirements):

  • Understanding of computing infrastructure:  hardware, middleware and software
  • Knowledge of the academic research community
  • Ability to communicate effectively with scientists, technical staff and the general public
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Willingness to travel extensively, both nationally and internationally, to visit other Data Centers and participate in meetings/conferences
  • Determined, self-motivated, logical and energetic with a keen interest in learning
  • Capable of working independently
  • Prior supervisory or management experience



The incumbent in this position works in an office and laboratory environment with occasional trips to field projects.  They are:

  • Frequently required to stand

  • Continually required to utilize hand and finger dexterity
  • Continually required to talk and/or listen
  • Continually utilize visual acuity to operate equipment, read technical information and/or use keyboard
  • Occasionally required to lift/push/carry items up to 25 pounds
  • While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet
