DMC Computer Center Remodel

December 2010

On the weekend of Dec 22, 2010, the DMC computer room was completely shutdown so that all servers, networking, and storage devices could be put into new racks and supplied with 10GbE internet.

The process took 4 people two days and nights, since there are over 60 servers. We installed 10 new Dell 48-core server machines, so that we could initiate the migration to a new virtualized environment.

Computer wiring

The pictures illustrate the before, during, and after. In the before picture, the wiring and electrical had become a complicated mess of routing and spaghetti. The new organization took all of the networking from underneath the floor and move it overhead where it is well-tagged, and much more manageable. All services were restored after 36 hours and work continues on getting all services wired with much higher capacity 10Gb ethernet.
