Earthquakes
in Taiwan result from complex tectonics associated with the subduction
of the Philippine Sea plate (PH) beneath Eurasia (EU), as shown
by plate motions in the area. The plot shows relative velocities
around the Philippine Sea (PH) and Caroline (CR) plates. Rates shown
are in mm/yr. Along the EU-PH and NA-PH boundaries, arrows show
PH motion with respect to EU or NA. Along the PA-PH and PA-CR boundaries,
Pacific (PA) motion with respect to PH or CR is shown. Along the
CR-PH boundary, CR motion with respect to PH is shown.
