Back in Socorro for 2009 Orientation

I am now back in Socorro, NM busily making preparations for the 2009 IRIS REU Orientation. However, as I do so, I am wondering where the 2008 interns (as well as all those before) are right now? For example, I just recently learned that Mollie has been accepted as the AGI Geoscience and Public Policy intern. I hope the rest of you are well and will get a notification of this post and login and reply.

I am currently working on my Ph.D. project which involves estimating distribution of serpentine in the subducting Cocos plate and determining the rate of magma flux and bulk composition of the Costa Rican volcanic arc using P and S-wave seismic velocities.  I passed my oral qualification exam today and now should have 4 years left at the University of Wyoming working with Professor Steve Holbrook.

I am now halfway done with

I am now halfway done with my month long geophysics field camp here at Mines. We spent the last two weeks out in the field collecting data in the Mt. Princeton region of Colorado to try and characterize the geothermal system in the region. The DOE and local business people hope to be able to put in a geothermal power plant in the region. In addition to my classmates from Mines a number of students and instructors from Boise State and Imperial College, London have joined us for this field camp. We will now spend the next two weeks back in Golden processing the data and writting a report.

Later in the summer I am going to Eastern Europe as part of my practicum experience with the McBride Honors Program in Public Affairs. It will be a busy summer, but I am certainly looking forward to it.   Hope that evryone is doing well.

 Cheers,

Mike

Hi, I will be a summer

Hi,

I will be a summer student fellow at the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (MARUM) in Bremen, Germany this summer. They haven't told me what I will be working on exactly, but I am really excited about this program!

I heard SAGE was a worthwhile experience. Let me know how it goes!

Hope you all have a great summer!

Hi Helen! Great to hear

Hi Helen! Great to hear from you as well! That looks like a very interesting program with students from around the world participating. For those that are interested in learning more about it, check out their blurb. Spreken ze deutch? :) You have one more year at UCLA left right?

hi michael! sorry for the

hi michael! sorry for the super delayed response. i just got finished with finals and watching everyone graduate at the dept. graduation :')... to finally answer your questions: i do have one more year and i do not speak any german, except for a few choice words that probably won't be helpful in getting around the country.

seems like your new bunch of interns sure like to blog. haha. i've been lazy but i think i need to figure out how to turn off the notifications...

This summer I am attending

This summer I am attending Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience (SAGE), in Los Alamos, New Mexico. I believe that Jamie Ryan and Alex Panessa are also attending SAGE. I will begin my master's work in the Fall of 2009 at the University of Utah, under Professor Michael Thorne, where I will perform research on the deep interior of the earth and subduction processes. Professor Michael Brudzinski, Miami University (Ohio) will be on my committee, and will help advise me on the subduction zone part of my research.

Hi Kevin! Great to hear

Hi Kevin! Great to hear from you! SAGE is a great program so I am sure you will find it to be an intense but enriching experience. How are the kids?
