Reflection

I have a little less than two weeks left, and I'm currently just editing figures and trying to write. I never wrote down my goals at the beginning of the summer, but I'm sure they've all been left. When I came to Fairbanks, I was hoping for a result from my project that I could use for my senior comps in geology. That was successful. I am outlining my paper at the moment. I haven't written my abstract yet, but am planning on doing that today and tomorrow.

On top of that, I had other goals I set for the summer that were focused more on the experience and not the outcome of the internship. I was hoping to get a good introduction to the types of tools and processes used to gather and analyse data. The field work my first week here was helpful in getting me experience with the aspect of gathering data. I really enjoyed it. All the time I've spent in Fairbanks has helped me gain experience with the analysis and I find it all fascinating and very useful, despite the tedium of some of the analysis, like the twoa nd a half weeks of picking arrivals. Other than that, I've also gained a lot of knowledge in regards to the thoughts that go into changing warning levels on eruptions, and the science that gets done during and immediately after the eruption occurs. That was something I never thought I'd gain, though am very glad I did. I enjoy going to the AVO meetings and will miss them when I leave.

On top of that, I've had a lot of fun so far. All that helps me learn that I really do want to do something like this in the future. I like what I'm doing, and while I definately want to do work that requires for me to go into the field, I don't really mind sitting behind a computer either.

I've also gotten to see some of Alaska and it's gorgeous. I do have the pictures on my computer, but I always end up posting while I'm at the office. I'll try to remember to post pictures when I'm at my laptop next time.

Great to hear that it was a

Great to hear that it was a positive experience. It sounds like you developed some technical expertise as well as a deeper interest in applications of your research. That's one of the best immediate outcomes for an internship!

How was the learning curve wiith unix and any codes you had to run? Are you excited to return to a world of day AND night?

More seriously, would you consider returning for graduate school? Is this a potential career path? You certainly don't have to answer these last questions here or now, but they're certainly important for everyone to ponder as their summer experiences come to a close.
