Eruption!

The plumes at okmok

Okmok erupted this weekend on Umnak Island in the Aleutians. Being at the Alaska Volcano Observatory, I get to hear all about what's currently going on. We just had our weekly meeting. There was absolutely no real indication that this explosive eruption was about to occur. A slight increase in vt (volcanic tremor) began only a few hours prior to the beginning of the event. The plumes are massive! If you are interested in any more informatio, check out the avo page for Okmok. It's updated frequently, and the seismic data is updated frequently. There's a lot of interesting things to be found.

Nice volcanism! I learned

Nice volcanism! I learned about Okmok long ago during igneous petrology.

Thanks for the update and

Thanks for the update and cool photos. The link to the AVO page is useful as I have checked it several times since you posted this. By the way, how is your work aligning with what you want to get out of the summer? Does it look like you will acheive what you wanted to?

That's really cool! Seems

Woah...that is just awesome.

Woah...that is just awesome. That looks to be a pretty good picture of it as well. Was it strong enough for you to feel any tremors where you're stationed, or did it occur without "shaking" things up? (I apologize, also, for the terrible pun).

No tremor up here. We are

No tremor up here. We are pretty far away though. The tremors did show up on several other stations in the arc though.
