Fireworks!

It looks like I may get some data to work with soon! Dr. Hole had me look up the 1979 USGS Imperial Valley survey data from the IRIS archives, and I filled out a request form yesterday. (Does anyone know how that works? Does IRIS mail the data on a cd or is there a link emailed out?)

Also, I was walking from school back to the apartment yesterday, and I was hoping to make it before another thunderstorm hit. As it started to rain, a car pulled up and some people offered me a ride. We also picked up another person walking home, a physics grad student. It turned out that the driver was a retired geology professor at Virginia Tech! He even has a mineral named after him, ribbeite!

Okay, and finally, fireworks! I went up to DC for the fourth of July weekend and got a great view of the fireworks from the Lincoln memorial.

Three of the girls I went with were doing an internship at VT and it kind of made me wish the IRIS internship were in one location. Well, I guess it's okay though because I like hearing about all your stories in different places!

Two rides with strangers so far... should I be worried as the program facilitator :) Let us know if you were able to retreive the data.

Haha, noo it's okay! They were really nice!

Yup, IRIS emailed me with a FTP link and I got the data. The person who helped me get it on a Unix computer said the data looked a little different, but hopefully Dr. Hole can help figure out how to fix it up sometime.

Good. I will trust your judgement then :) Did you get a hold of a bike from someone yet?

Yeah, someone lent me a bike!

Awww! Fireworks! I miss those! It's too bright in Fairbanks.

Sounds like you're taking

Sounds like you're taking full advantage of being in the east while you're there with your trip to D.C. and all.  Sounds like a blast!  I too wish often that all the interns were in one location.  It would make being in an unfamiliar place more fun, because you'd all be in an unfamiliar place TOGETHER.  Oh well.  At least you found some other interns to do things with.  :)

Great fireworks pictures!

Great fireworks pictures! Once IRIS assembles the dataset, you should be able to just access it via FTP. They'll include instructions on how to do so in the notification.
