University of Colorado at Boulder - Project Summary

The IRIS intern will work on discovering and mapping out subsurface crustal faults and shear zones using converted seismic wave (receiver function) imaging. The student will choose between a study of Southern Wyoming Rocky Mountain Laramide arches, Los Angeles Basin, or central Himalaya. The project does not directly involve fieldwork, but the intern will be given the opportunity to participate in fieldwork associated with other projects (Rio Grande Rift GPS, Boulder Creek Critical Zone hydrogeophysics). Alternatively, if the intern has reasonable programming skills, the intern can work with research associate Vera Schulte-Pelkum on recoding a P polarization analysis program to work with standard seismic data formats. The method can then be applied to western US targets (looking for anisotropy in the hypothesized fossil slab under WY, for instance).
