Now Back to My Project

Well, the field work left me with some great experience but I the last two weeks of my internship I had a lot of work to do.  Of course first thing to happen after I got back from Las Vegas was the hard drive on my computer died--a manufacturer defect timed conveniently 3 weeks after the warranty was up.  Luckily, though, everything I had on it was backed up except for some of our pictures.  Other than some misplaced items I didn't lose anything that I had been working on.

Recap:

Finding Faults Near Sin City

When I got back from Texas I, with the help of Brad (a grad student) and Bob (from IRIS) picked up the Texans that had been deployed for my own project 2 days before we left.  And, after a week in Socorro we were off again for some more field work.  This time outside of Las Vegas.  This field work was for Sandra’s thesis.   She creating a high-resolution image of a fault that could potentially have implications on Las Vegas and Yucca Mtn.  We spent Sunday driving (it took us about 11.5 hours to reach the outskirts of Vegas.)  From there we drove to UNLV via Las Vegas Blvd.  While it

Adventures in Texas

The second week in July I had the opportunity to get some field experience by participating in an experiment in the Potrios Mts west of El Paso near the Mexican border.  We worked with the University of Texas El Paso with Dr. Kate Miller and Dr. Steve Harder.  I learned a lot.  The first day was short because we drove from Socorro to El Paso, stopped and had breakfast at Dr.

Out in the Field

We are trying to do refraction survey of the Socorro Magma body with a line of Texans approx. 125km long.  The seismic source of our survey will be explosions set of by EMRTC (and energetic materials research company--cool huh, we don't get to see the explosions, but its still cool.)  Well after scouting powerline roads for two days and obtaining permits from BLM, and the two wildlife refuges that the powerlines cross we decided that these afore said roads would be ideal: they were straight and quiet.

Progress

Well, Now I feel like I'm actually making some progress with my project.  I am feeling right at home at NMT and getting to know people in the computer lab.  Cathy, my advisor, decided that the route that we scouted and planned for our survey isn't good because its along the interstate, so Sandra and I are going out to scout another route.  LIve and learn!
