Updating Station Info: station picture?

Postby JHID on Wed Oct 21, 2009 2:41 pm

I tried uploading a picture of our Seismograph and keep getting the message that the image must be a jpg, png, gif.

I have tried using a jpeg and png file and neither of them have worked. I've even tried compressing the image with no luck. Is there a maximum file size? :?:

Is this option disabled for some reason or is there something else I should check?

Jerome,

We just tried the procedure and it seemed to work. Can you tell us what operating system (XP, VISTA, etc?) and what browser (IE, firefox, etc) you are using.

Also, can you attach your photo to an email and send it to sishelp@iris.edu so that we can try to duplicate the error.

Thanks so much!

I'm running Windows XP service pack3 and Internet Explorer.

I will email a copy of the picture, however I plan on using a different one once I get a chance to take a better one. I'd really like to be able to change and update on my end if possible.

Thanks.

Steve,

Our IRIS computer tech group will be back on Monday, but in the meantime I've experimented with your photo and a variety of others and think that I have a workaround for you.

When I reduced the resolution of your photo I was able to upload it onto my station (OSOR) successfully. Your original resolution was 3008 x 2000 pixels. When I reduced it to 600 x 400 pixels is uploaded fine. There are a variety of graphics programs which can do the resolution change such as Microsoft Paint or Microsoft Office Picture Manager. If you don't know what program you have on your computer, just open the folder containing your image. Then right mouse click on the image and select "open with". This brings up a list of graphics programs available to you.

Longer term, I'll contact the IRIS computer folks to see what the size limitations on photos are.

Be sure to let us know if you have any trouble.

I actually tried reducing down to 640x480 since that is what the note under the upload window says. But even that didn't work. I tried reducing down to smaller and smaller sizes today and using different file formats again. I am thinking maybe it is on my end. I will try from home where I won't have network filter and firewall issues to wonder about. If I still can't get it to work I'll contact you guys again. Thanks for all your help.

Steve,

That is odd. I wonder if it has to do with a firewall on your school site. If that is the problem it should work ok from your house. Let us know one way or the other.

Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

This was a bug on our end that only shows up in Internet Explorer due to it handling file types differently than most other browsers.

It should now be resolved. Also, any image files uploaded should be less than 2MB. The update your school form has now been updated to reflect this as well.
