A large aftershock from the February 27th Magnitude 8.8 earthquake occurred on the subduction zone plate boundary at the Peru – Chile Trench where the oceanic Nazca Plate subducts beneath the continental South American Plate. This is one of the largest of over 200 aftershocks larger than Magnitude 5 that have occurred in the region.
