Description
This tutorial provides some basic tools and procedures generally used to understand broadband seismic data with Matlab. This is just one simple toolkit and many more are available by searching the IRIS website.
Audience
Undergraduate
Time
90 - 120 Minutes
Objective
By the end of this session students should be able to:
· Feel comfortable manipulating time series data in a processing environment (Matlab)
· Be able to convert data from the raw format in digital counts to true ground motion
· Filter seismograms for analysis within various frequency bands
· Isolate ground motion from teleseismic earthquakes
· Visualize anthropogenic sources of noise on records
· Understand the full spectrum of data returned by broadband instruments
