Specifications for Broadband Sensors

GSN Primary Very-Broadband Seismometer Specifications

The Global Seismographic Network (GSN) is looking for a new generation of primary broadband seismic sensors to replace the ~50 existing borehole sensors and the ~100 vault sensors in the network (plus spares).  The GSN intends to purchase, test and evaluate prototype sensors over the next two years (2011-12) in order to be in a position to begin replacement procurements after 2013.

The specifications provided below were assembled by the IRIS Instrumentation Committee and are being made available for comment before becoming a part of the final procurement package.  The specifications assume that sensors are traditional force feedback systems with three analog outputs which are digitized outside of the seismometer.  Other technologies will be considered if the resulting sensor has comparable or improved bandwidth, dynamic range, noise performance, and physical characteristics as the sensors described below.

We would appreciate comments on these specifications by 1 February, 2011.  For more information, questions, or comments, please contact Kent Anderson (acting GSN Program Manager) at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)  Pertinent questions, answers, and clarifications will be posted on this page.
