What is seismic retrofitting?

Seismic retrofitting involves modification of existing structures to make them more resistant to seismic activity, ground motion and liquefaction due to earthquakes. The photo shows the seismic retrofitting on the telecommunications center (phone and Internet) for the town of New Madrid, Missouri. The external steel beams reduce the potential for shaking damage during a major earthquake.
