IDA Chief Engineer

UCSD’s Project IDA ( http://ida.ucsd.edu ) seeks a chief engineer to lead a team of engineers and technicians who install and maintain scientific equipment comprising a global seismographic network with sites at 41 locations in 26 countries worldwide.  Under general direction, the incumbent will organize and manage laboratory facilities supporting the IRIS/IDA portion of the Global Seismographic Network (http://www.iris.edu/hq/programs/gsn)  (GSN).  This includes: 1) site preparation and construction of new GSN station facilities; 2) installation, operation, and maintenance of instruments, computers, and communication equipment at GSN station sites; 3) development of policies and procedures to monitor operational status of stations, correct problems and manage equipment inventory; and 4) interaction with scientific and engineering personnel of international host institutions.  The chief engineer’s tasks center upon system integration, installation, and correct operation of seismographic recording equipment (including data acquisition, telemetry, signal detection, recording, and power). The ability to exercise management responsibility within the scope of established policies and procedures is essential.
