Data Services Products: EMC-SAW24B16 A global shear velocity structure of the mantle from body, surface and higher-mode waveforms

Summary

A 3-D shear velocity structure of mantle based on the inversion of body, surface, and higher mode waveforms, Megnin and Romanowicz (2000) . The model was derived from handpicked transverse component waveforms and is parameterized laterally in spherical harmonics up to degree 24 (Edmonds normalization) and radially in 16 unevenly spaced splines. The SAW24B16 model is expressed as the percent perturbation from PREM .

Description

Name SAW24B16
Title A global shear velocity structure of the mantle from body, surface and higher-mode waveforms
Type 3-D Tomography Earth Model
Sub Type S velocity
Year 2000
Short Description   The model SAW24B16 is a VSH model parameterized laterally in spherical harmonics up to degree 24 (Edmonds normalization) and radially in 16 unevenly spaced splines. Model values are percent perturbation relative to the anisotropic reference model PREM .

SAW24B16.grid.2×2.tar.gz (~2.2 MB) – Model on a 2°x2° grid for depths from 50 to 2850 km at 100 km intervals except between 50 and 100 km and 2800 and 2850 km. Includes source code and executable for “QA1grid” to output model values. A1dgrid reads the coefficients from the model file saw24b16.A1d and outputs model values in percent perturbation from PREM on a grid (default 2°x2°).

Data Set Description The model was derived with handpicked transverse component waveforms, including:
1. SH body waves (S, SS, S3, S4, ScS, ScS2, ScS3, Sdiff and corresponding depth phases: sS, etc…), down to a corner frequency of 32 sec
2. 1st & 2nd orbit Love waves
3. 1st & 2nd orbit higher modes
down to a corner frequency of 70 sec
