The Charge to the GSN
The GSN Standing Committee develops policies to facilitate a timely
and successful installation of the Global Seismic Network, and the
rapid dissemination of the data collected by the GSN.
- Set standards for GSN instrumentation and data collection.
- Develop and maintain a siting plan that ensures the timely deployment
of GSN instruments and accounts for the contributions of other
`equivalent' networks in maximizing the global coverage afforded
by the GSN.
- Set standards/policies to ensure the timely flow of data from
the GSN stations to the DCC's.
- Develop and evaluate strategies for the successful procurement
and installation of GSN equipment so as to complete the global
seismographic network by 2002 (128 `goal' stations).
- Cooperate with the USGS, the Federation of Digital Broad Band
Seismograph Networks (FDSN) and, other groups interested in establishing
digital stations for global studies, to establish a well-distributed
network in an expeditious manner.
- Develop plans for the long-term maintenance of the GSN.
- Coordinate with the Ocean Seismic Network Steering Commmitte
to facilitate the deployment of ocean bottom stations, so as to
reach the GSN goal of uniform global coverage.
- Develop new initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of the
GSN.
- Advise the Program Manager and the IRIS President on program
planning and yearly budgets.
