EarthScope Transportable array stations now being installed

USArray

EarthScope is installing a dense array of seismographs across the
continental US and Alaska. The array will consist of 400 transportable
broadband seismic stations that will advance across the country,
eventually covering 2000 locations over a 12 year period. The stations
will have an average residence time of 18-24 months at each location.
The seismographs will record local, regional and global earthquakes to
produce high-resolution images of the Earth's interior from the crust
to the core and to study the origin and characteristics of earthquakes
and earthquake faults. Marcos Alvarez is shown here checking the
output from a new station near Bend Oregon.
