US Educational Seismology Network
Over the course of the
past decade, a group of science education programs has begun to
define a new coalition between the scientific research and science
education communities. The U.S. Educational Seismology Network
is a newly formed consortium that seeks to promote the use of seismographs and seismic data for science
education. By deploying seismological sensors in educational
settings, these educational seismograph stations are actively engaging
students in the world of scientific research and at the same time
contributing to the national scientific infrastructure. Developed
under the auspices of IRIS's Education and Outreach program, the
USESN seeks to promote the installation and effective use of educational
seismographs and seismic data, to disseminate high-quality curricular
materials and educational services that promote the use of seismology
in science education, and to provide an organizational framework
for coordination and advocacy of educational seismology across the
country.
A workshop to plan the
future of the USESN will be held September 13-15, 2003 at the Mt.
Washington Conference Center in Baltimore and applications to attend
are invited from interested educators until July 15. Further information
about the consortium, workshop and resources for prospective participants
can be found at: http://www.indiana.edu/~usesn/.
