Potential earthquake damage in California

Comparison of the 1857 Ft. Tejon earthquake on the southern San Andreas with the 2002 Denali earthquake of the same size. Superimposing the Denali damage distribution on the San Andreas gives a sense of the possible effects if the 1857 earthquake were to recur. San Bernardino and Palmdale would likely be heavily damaged; northern Los Angeles might suffer moderate damage . (click image to view at full size)
