Seismologists deploying IRIS PASSCAL broadband instruments on Mount Erebus, Antarctica

Erebus is one of a very few continuously active volcanos in the world and hosts a unique lava lake in its inner crater. Because of its persistent low-level eruptive activity, the volcano constitutes a natural laboratory for studying volcanic physics and processes. The National Science Foundation, which also funds the IRIS consortium, maintains a large research presence on the continent which includes seismological and many other earth science studies.
