Viewed from the air, the San Andreas fault has subtle expression in this part of the Carrizo Plain in southern California.  The fault itself runs across the image, sloping slightly down from the left side to the right (yellow dashed line).  Large earthquakes on the fault, including most recently the 1857 Fort Tejon event, have created right lateral offsets of two stream channels that flow across the fault.
