This photo from Nevada shows a seismic reflection/refraction experiment to image one of several potential sinkholes (as shown by the yellow dashed line) on an alluvial fan in the Virgin Mountains south of Mesquite, NV. These features are evaporite karst rather than carbonate karsts, which are a much slower process, but can be just as devastating.
