Students Shake Up IRIS HQ!!
By building model skyscrapers and creating their own earthquakes,
6th grade students from the KIPP/KEY Academy in Washington D.C.
shook-up IRIS headquarters, on January 16th, 2003. During their
visit, KIPP/KEY students applied basic seismology concepts, learned
as part of their 6th grade science curriculum to challenges designed
to enhance their understanding. IRIS seismologists John Taber, and
Christel Hennet explored wave propagation, instrumentation, data
interpretation, and the impact of earthquakes on society with students
using a variety of hands-on activities. The two-hour visit developed
by IRIS staff supported the academy’s desire to extend students
understanding of seismology beyond the classroom and ensured that
everyone had a great time!
