Application Deadline: March 17, 2008
The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Program for Array Seismic Studies of the Continental Lithosphere (PASSCAL) has an opening for a 2008 summer student intern. The duration of the internship is flexible (up to three months, depending on student availability).
This position is designed for an advanced undergraduate or graduate student who has an interest in experiment design, field methods, seismograph electronics, and data processing.
SAGE - Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience
Application Deadline: March 31, 2008
The Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience is a unique educational program designed to introduce students in geophysics and related fields to "hands on" geophysical exploration and research. The program emphasizes both teaching of field methods and research related to a variety of basic and applied problems.
- LEARN seismic reflection & refraction techniques.
- GET to the gravity of the matter.
- FAMILIARIZE yourself with electromagnetic methods
- APPLY geophysics to environmental or archaelogical problems
- MEET other students with similar geophysical interest
- INTRODUCE yourself to career opportunities-talk with industry representatives
- STUDY the tectonics of an active continental rift
SAGE is sponsored by the Los Alamos National Laboratory branch of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, University of California.
IRIS Workshop Fellowships

Application Deadline: April 4, 2008
The 2008 IRIS Workshop will include sessions on Integrative Science, USArray, Polar Geophysics, Episodic Tremor and Slip, and Synergy between Monitoring and Research. Poster sessions and special interest group meetings throughout the workshop will provide a forum for in-depth discussion on a wide range of topics. Evening events and a field trip will incorporate modern dance, live music, viticulture and barbeque. Registration opens on February 18th.
Student and postdoctoral fellow at IRIS member institutions may request support of up to $500 to cover the cost of travel. IRIS will pay for lodging and provide meals but the student must pay the workshop registration fee.

- Conduct exciting research with state of the art geophysical data and leading researchers at IRIS institutions
- Develop an understanding of scientific inquiry, including designing and conducting scientific investigations, defending scientific arguments, and preparing publications
- Gather, manage, and convey information, using various skills, strategies, resources, and
- Learn, use, and evaluate technologies for the collection and study of geophysical data.
This paid experience features a week-long orientation program, the use of a variety of virtual communication technologies to help you stay connected with other interns during your 8 to 10 week research placement, and an opportunity to present your research at a scientific meeting.
SEG Scholarship Program
http://foundation.seg.org/scholarships
Application Deadline: February 18, 2008
In 1956 the Society of Exploration Geophysicists began a program of encouraging the establishment of scholarship funds by companies and individuals engaged or interested in the field of geophysics. SEG saw the need for a more appropriate organization and caused the SEG Foundation to be organized.
The number of scholarships available depends chiefly upon the number of sponsors and the amounts they contribute. For the 2007-2008 academic year, the Foundation awarded 172 scholarships totaling US$448,350. This represented 80 renewals of scholarships to students on a continuing basis and 92 scholarships to new recipients receiving grants for the first time. In addition to general scholarships, other scholarships are available to students who meet specific criteria.
