How do I get station response information?

Station response information is part of the SEED data format and is also readily accessible in different forms from the IRIS DMC database.

If you have a SEED file and wish to get station responses from the SEED header, run rdseed on the file and select the option to extract station response.  This can come in the form of a RESP file, which is an ASCII representation of the station instrumentation or a SAC PZ file, which is an ASCII format of poles and zeroes understood by the SAC software.

You can also get station response information from the IRIS DMC web pages.  A good way to access the IRIS Database is through SeismiQuery.

There is a web servlet available via SeismiQuery and the MetaData Aggregator (MDA) that can produce a RESP file directly from the database.  For more information, please visit http://www.iris.edu/resp/resp.do

For users familiar with the BREQ_FAST request format, a BREQ_FAST request can be sent to DATALESS@iris.washington.edu to request a dataless SEED file containing metadata for the requested stations. Another option is to use the WebRequest Form to get a dataless SEED file. Query for RESP using the SeismiQuery BREQ_FAST form

For real-time data, the BUD Query Interface now offers the option of requesting a dataless SEED file as a part of the data selection process.  A dataless SEED file for all channels in BUD is available via FTP as well.  For more information, please consult the BUD start page.

Finally, IRIS DMC now has a REST-ful web service called ws/station that can provide station response information in StationXML format.  Please consult the station web service web page for more information.
