What type of data is handled by IRIS?

The IRIS Data Management System is tasked with archiving seismic data from many sources.

Most of the data stored at the Data Management Center in Seattle can be categorized as continuous, passive-source seismic data collected by broadband instruments.

The DMC also stores active-source (man-made explosion) data, and data from non-seismic instruments, commonly referred to as environmental, gravimetric, magnetotelluric, state-of-health, or historical record digital scanning projects, and others.
