Q: I downloaded some data from IRISDMC and I would like to include this data on my website as I will be using it in an upcoming paper. I couldn't find any information on the data rights or ownership on IRIS web site. Is it okay to redistribute this data and how do I carry out the citations?
A: We certainly encourage the use of the data, materials, and presentations that IRIS DMC provides when it furthers the work of the scientific community. You pose a good question regarding how to cite the source, and IRIS is considers this an important issue in its responsibilities for serving data and information.
Though I am not an expert in this area, as a start, I can suggest that you consult our web page on providing citiations:
I think that citing the DMS as indicated is appropriate in your case. In addition, listing URLs to tools used or web sites visited are generally acceptable citations.
What is also important to us is that our providing networks are acknowledged as relates to the data that you use in your studies. Also, please consult the FDSN citation page for additional citation information on seismic networks.
If your intent is to do any large scale mirroring of our data, downloads, or web presence, please consult with us before doing so.
