Request data by station location

Q: How can I find out what stations IRIS has data for that fall within a latitude/longitude bounding box?

A:  A user can find seismic data by station using a latitude/longitude bounding box in a number of different tools:

VASE
In the Map/Find Stations screen the user can draw a bounding box to query the server for stations within the defined latitude/longitude area. View the VASE tutorial

Read the Vase Manual

JWEED
In the Map screen, the user can set a latitude/longitude bounding box, then use the Select Networks screen to select and map stations from the defined area.  View the JWEED map tutorial

Read the JWEED Manual

MetaData Aggregator

The MetaData Aggregator (MDA) returns metadata summaries from the IRIS DMC database including data availability and links to further services.
Five levels of summary are available: network list, network, station, location and channel

Input parameters are specified in the URI as extensions of the form:

http://www.iris.edu/mda/[network]/[station]/[location]/[channel]

Use '--' for [location] to specify a blank (space-space) location code.

Example:
Network = UW,  Station = ASH (Crater, Mt. St. Helens)
http://www.iris.edu/mda/UW/ASH
data is available in the archive from 1981/05/13 to 1981/09/15

Go to MDA

IRIS Web Services

Use the ws/availability service to search for available data within a specified latitude and longitude.  You can also search by distance from a lat/lon point.

For example:  http://www.iris.edu/ws/availability/query?net=IU&cha=E*&start=2010-02-27T06.30.00&end=2010-02-27T10.30.00&minlat=32.0&maxlat=49.0&minlon=-110.0&maxlon=-87.0&output=xml
